Get Excited to Learn Rock Drumming
themusicedge.com :: Getting started with drums
I just found a good article that will help get you psyched about playing. Here's a portion of it:
You wanna hit something? Go ahead. Hit some drums. A lot of new musicians want to be drummers, and who can blame them? Drumming is fun, it's physical, and you can't get a groove on without it. Even though the drummer is usually behind the singers, guitarists, and bass players onstage, everyone in the audience pays attention to the drummer. Arms are flailing, feet are stomping, cymbals are swinging. Plus, the drum set is like a motorcycle plunked right down on the stage: It's big, loud, and has a lot of color and metal. You don't need a lot of drums to whack on to make music, Big sets are expensive and aren't any louder than smaller sets. You can add to a basic drum set with some other percussion instrument (including something electronic). Check out these options:

What's Your Inspiration to Learn Rock Drumming? This was Chris Frazier's:
This is it – The chance of a lifetime. Years of dedication, sacrifice, and hard work could pay off right now. As the drummer sits nervously behind his set, the door swings open and in walks Steve Vai. He nonchalantly straps on his guitar, turns, looks the drummer dead in the eyes and says: “Let’s see what you’ve got, kid.” Frightening? You bet!Meet Chris Frazier, who just two weeks after moving to Los Angeles found himself in the above scenario. His bio reads like a movie script – complete with a modern day “home-town boy makes good” story line.Born in Bethesda, Maryland, Frazier spent much of his childhood travelling up and down the East Coast with his mother, a folk singer. The constant exposure to music provided Frazier with a healthy dose of inspiration. And a 4-piece, red-sparkle Kent drum set under the Xmas tree at age seven didn’t hurt either. Forget baseball cards and shooting marbles, drumming was now a full-time obsession for Chris Frazier. With Ginger Baker as his role-model, he set out to learn rock drumming.
